“The old sleepers we bought look amazing as our new winding pathn leading to our secret garden”, said Sarah Joinson, from Birmingham.
Once old railway lines are removed, the best grades of sleepers are recycled. They are heavy and full of character, hence many people choose reclaimed sleepers when designing garden features as they provide a strong, attractive structure.
Reclaimed sleepers are treated with creosote and this limits the use of them. For example, they are not recommended for use
in children’s playgrounds. An EU directive exists covering the legislation surrounding treated, reclaimed sleepers. You can
find this at www.berr.gov.uk. In summary though, reclaimed sleepers should not be used indoors, in areas of constant skin contact or in areas on which you are eating. However, there are a plethora of other situations where reclaimed sleepers can look decorative and even provide structural support. Plus, think of
the recycling! If we didn’t utilise this timber it would be burnt!
